The Midlands Rose Society hosted their 4 th  Open Garden this year.
The HERITAGE GARDEN only grows Heritage roses which must have been bred by 1945. The
oldest rose in the garden is the PEACE rose which was bred after the Second World war in
1945.
Our oldest rose is dated 1160 called Rosa Gallica Apothecary.
We now have just over 140 different varieties of heritage roses in the garden.
 
The garden was open over the weekend of 19 th  and 20 th  October and although there was a
continuous drizzle throughout the weekend, more than 100 people visited the garden.
This year, visitors were able to view a map of the garden showing all the roses in the
different beds as well as a booklet telling them interesting stories about some of the roses.
We sold cuttings from the garden of some of the roses as well as plants and seeds from the
garden.
 
Owing to the cold weather in September, the roses were late in blooming , but this year
some of the earlier flowering roses, put on a most beautiful display and were admired by all.
The public also admired all our underplanting which is not seen in nurseries.
 
The garden is situated in the Garlington Estate in Hilton, KZN.
